SEO 101: Keyword Research

You should be able to guess the high-volume keywords and keyphrases that searchers will use to find the information, product or service that your website provides. I will illustrate this with an example for a website targetting people looking for Home Information Packs in the UK.

The high volume terms will be keywords and phrases such as:

- Home Information Pack
- Home Information Packs
- HIPs
- HIP
- Home Condition Report

You can validate your list by using keyword research tools suchs as:

- Google Adwords
- Google Suggest (Just start typing your keywords into the search box)
- Wordtracker

To extend this list one of the best approaches is to get a group of people together to brainstorm what people will search for when looking for what your site has to offer. These terms will be searched for less frequently but are of value. For the example above, you may include old terminology e.g. Seller’s Pack, modifiers e.g. HIPs town, competitors names etc.

This is invaluable information for those interested in Home Information Pack keywords

The challenge is to include these keywords into your site and content naturally, your site won’t rank for a keyword unless it is included in the content. This is not a completely true statement and I’ll elaborate on this in later posts.

These keywords are not only a useful guide for writing content and structuring your site, but can also be used to power a Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaign using services such as Google Adwords.

  1. I would love t be able to understand the jargon, I have set up my site http://www.HomeInspectionsChester.co.uk with little knowledge and the more I think I understand the harder it gets to implement. I had a company called Leadbank they had all the answers but wanted a pound of flesh every month for the experience I am not sure at this stage whether enough leads can be converted from traffic to justify the expenditure. I put Home Inspections Chester on a good property site for a months trial it generated about 100 leads I followed them all up without converting 1.

  2. Hi Dermot, I just did a link:www.HomeInspectionsChester.co.uk search on Google – you currently have only two inbound links. Did you see these SEO link building tips.

I am guessing something is wrong with the leads or your offer if you didn’t convert any of them. Did you ask for feedback from the potential leads? Most people will give you useful feedback if you ask why they chose someone else – it is invaluable information.

If there is any jargon you don’t understand just drop a comment here.

  3. [...] is the easy. When using links within your website make sure they convey meaning and include your target keywords and avoid using terms such as “more”, “next”, and “read more” [...]
